A month after the United States National team didn’t qualify for the World Cup. Soccer fans around the states were mourning this horrible news for the sport here in the states. The sport in U.S. isn’t that popular and some may say it’s even dying. Fans of the sport want to see a revival here. Soccer isn’t a major sport here but around the world its the most well known. Many are wondering what’s next here in the U.S. after not making it to the the World Cup. Fans all around are looking for hope. Some may say that hope is found in the city of Louisville, Kentucky where something big is brewing and has been for 3 seasons now.
Louisville City FC is Kentucky’s only fully professional soccer club. It has quickly established a reputation both for winning on the field and solid fan support off the field. Louisville City FC is often referred to as LouCity. It is a member of the United Soccer League, USL, which is one level below Major League Soccer. The USL includes 32 teams across the country, some of them independent and others acting as affiliates with MLS clubs. LouCity is a team on the rise and making noise in the USL.
In their first season in the USL, LouCity made it to the USL Eastern Conference Final in the 2015 inaugural season. In LouCity’s second season it did the exact same thing and made it back to the USL Eastern Conference Final. This made it 2 strait years of coming just short of making it to the Championship game. Some would say this was a disappointment but for a team that only has existed for 2 seasons that is an amazing accomplishment! Talks of LouCity getting it’s own stadium started becoming more likely with every win.
2 years down and fans expected that LouCity should have the hang of things. In the 2017 season LouCity not only had the best record in all of the USL Eastern Conference but it made it right back to the USL Eastern Conference Final for the third strait year. Louisville City FC didn’t stop there but would win the Eastern Conference Final and advance to the USL Championship. It only took 3 years for LouCity to find its way to the USL Championship game and start making a name for itself in soccer to show who LouCity is and the noise they are making in the city of Louisville! LouCity would go on to win the USL Championship game against the Swope Park Rangers with a score of 1-0 late in the game. This showed not only the city of Louisville but the USL and the rest of the U.S. that LouCity was something special and something big is happening in Louisville.
With the success the team has had, many have wondered if this team really does deserve a stadium of its own after 3 successful seasons and 1 championship. LouCity currently plays home games at Louisville Slugger Field. The stadium averages an attendance of 8,601 fans attend LouCity’s USL games. In 2017 they ranking at the top in the league in attendance. For a club that hasn’t been around for a long time this is really good numbers to have. Louisville Slugger Field can seat 13,131 for baseball games so only a little over a half of the seats are filled up for soccer games. This brings the question many people have been asking, why build a brand new stadium in Louisville if you can’t pack out an entire stadium for regular attendance for LouCity USL games?
LouCity got approved by the mayor Greg Fischer and city government officials in Kentucky to move forward with building a new stadium. The stadium is currently projected to open in March 2020, satisfying a USL mandate that all franchises must play in soccer-specific stadiums by the 2020 season. This works out perfectly for the USL and seems like it could be a could a substantial jump for Louisville being able to bring in a MLS soccer club. The stadium would seat 10,000 and brings in new business’ to the community in which the facility is built. With attendance growing by a thousand each year by the year 2020 when the 6 season kicks off LouCity looks like it could very well pack out that stadium. The facts don’t lie, Louisville City FC is on the rise and fans are coming.
A major question going along with the new facility for LouCity soccer is, how will this stadium be paid for? It seems as that taxpayers will be involved in this process of building a new stadium in the city of Louisville. The Fischer administration says the deal is public-private partnership. This is said to benefit both parties. If this holds true we will have to wait and see. Based on the facts with growing numbers in attendance and a championship team that could win more, this could hold to be a true statement. LouCity would later on pay back the government when revenue starts to pour in. Only time will truly tell if LouCity FC will become an investment well worth it. You decide if this is true?
Louisville City FC is on the rise and the people of Louisville better watch out because we have something special happening in our city and in the world of soccer. LouCity is in the USL now but watch out because with a new stadium and possibly more championship trophies Louisville City FC could be working its way up to the MLS. Louisville which is a city known for the Kentucky Derby could soon be known for a sport many call dying that is alive and well in LouCity!
